The study of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) provides students with the knowledge and skills to understand the world in which they live and the societies, cultures, and environments that shape it.
From Year 7 to Year 10, students study both History and Geography as mandatory subjects. These courses develop specific historical and geographical concepts and skills, enabling students to investigate the past, explore contemporary issues, and consider possible futures.
Across Years 7 to 10, students also have the opportunity to extend their learning through a variety of HSIE elective subjects, including: Commerce, Murder and Mysteries, Forensic Archaeology and Psychology.
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.

πStage 6 (Year 11 and 12) Courses
For the HSC, students can select from a broad range of HSIE courses that provide both academic challenge and valuable preparation for future pathways. These include:
- Aboriginal Studies
- Ancient History
- Business Studies
- VET Business Services (Optional HSC exam for ATAR purposes)
- Economics
- Geography
- History Extension
- Legal Studies
- Modern History
- VET Retail Services (Optional HSC exam for ATAR purposes)
- Society and Culture
These subjects foster critical thinking, analysis, and communication skills that are highly valued in the workplace, further study, and everyday life.
π Learning beyond the Classroom
In HSIE, learning is enhanced by a range of local, interstate, and international excursions, offering students opportunities to engage directly with historical sites, cultural experiences, and geographical environments. Such experiences bring learning to life and provide rich, authentic contexts for study.
Students are also encouraged to build community and real-world connections through projects, partnerships, and fieldwork. These opportunities allow students to apply their learning in meaningful ways, strengthening both their understanding of HSIE and their role as active, informed citizens.
