NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Great Baseball Win

In the next round of 16 of this competition, the Proud Shield, we played Rouse Hill High School at our local ground, Waterboard Oval, Blackalls Park on Wednesday 14.8.19.

The 6 innings game was played with good sportsmanship and fairness. The boys must be congratulated on their game play and level of respect shown to the opposition. Toronto proved the victors 8-1.

We were led by our Year 12 boys, who took time out of their Trial HSC study to play. Liam Purcell has taken the year off his weekend baseball to concentrate on his study, but pitched the entire game for us, which included a massive 9 strike outs. Kynan Harding scored a home run from a drive down the first base line into the outfield. Angus Ping and Joel Borrow each got home twice and Alex Russell, Blake Nicholls and Zane Howarth also got home. Outfield fly balls were taken by Luke Croquett and Alex Russell. Alex also organised the outfield players while Zane hussled the infielders. Our only injury of the day was an awkward bounce taken by Cameron Mott on the arm. He also has the ball stitch marks on the arm to show for his efforts.

It was a team result.

Well done, boys on a terrific result!

Now we face The Rivers College in our next game.

This year at THS we have been running the Jumpstart program which is an initiative of the NSW Dept of Education. It is a year-long project that gives students a deep dive into different vocational areas whilst still attending normal classes. So far we have done small business, graphic design, construction and now we are doing hospitality.

Recently the students learning construction created new garden beds for the school. Big thanks to the students for their hard work!

Another exciting excursion was to at Moor Restaurant at Newcastle East where they spent the day in the restaurant learning all things coffee making, coffee roasting, cooking and a day in the life of restaurant work. The students enjoyed some lunch and a break at the beach.

Open Soccer Boys have huge win at Lyle Peacock Oval

The Open Boys’ Soccer Team have progressed to the Quarter-finals of the NSWCHS Puma Cup, as they defeated another strong team - Cronulla High School - on Tuesday. Nicholas Charlesworth’s first half left-foot finish gave Toronto High School the win, in what was a high quality match at Lyall Peacock Oval.

Toronto were the more attacking side, in what has been depicted as our biggest soccer match in the last 20 years. Wingers Bailey Snowden and Cale Flannery treated the spectators to numerous step-overs and nutmegs, as they raided Cronulla’s penalty area. With news spreading that Toronto was playing against the NSWCHS Goalkeeper, the boys knew they would need to capitalise, even though chances would be scarce.

Cronulla’s quality showed, as they jumped on any loose ball and turned it into a rapid counter-attack. However, they were often met with the defensive wall of players wearing 22, 83 on their jerseys. Those players being Luke Croquett and Lachlan Horn respectively, preventing nearly every ball getting through to the always reliable goalkeeper, Hallam Carlson, who had a fairly quiet game. It was not only the 22, 83 boys that stood strong in defence; Clancy Muddle and Dario D’Angelo proved themselves to not only be part of a strong defensive unit, but also turned defence into attack.

Dario D’Angelo came away with the Man of the Match award for his efforts throughout the game, facing up against a very talented Cronulla winger. Defensively, he just could not be beaten 1v1, or in the air. He also showed his quality in attack by making good runs and key passes to the midfielders, so that they could create chances for the captain and striker, Nicholas Charlesworth.

Playing as the attacking midfielder, Joshua Frazer Whitten, supported by Eden Garbett and Joshua Deaves behind him, showed his class and skill from the onset. This proved vital as he conjured up some magic in the 30th minute, to deliver a perfect pass to Nicholas Charlesworth, who took the chance as he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-right pocket of the goal; meanwhile, the goalkeeper was left clutching at air.

As the later stages of the game drew to a close, Toronto missed a few sitters (no names mentioned here). This allowed Cronulla to throw numbers forward, as their desperation grew. In what proved to be a very nerve-racking final 10 minutes, Toronto’s defence refused to crumble under the immense pressure. As the final whistle blew, Toronto had won 1-0.

Equally important, the substitutes played a large role in the win by ensuring the energy and the quality of our side was sustained for the duration of the match. Mitchell Sueli, Flynn Fittler and Liam Bell all put in immense efforts, coming off the bench to keep Cronulla’s attack at bay. Second goalkeeper, Declan Muddle, was not called upon, but showed he is eager to don the gloves if necessary.

Special mentions go to Joel Borrow and Kingsgrove Sports Newcastle for having our players look fantastic in their new personalised jerseys, Mr. Richards for providing the team with new equipment and pizza for both teams post-match, Miss Crawford for being the makeshift Manager and providing oranges at halftime, Mrs Dare for her photography skills and the three ball boys, Jake Callen, Banjo Fitzgerald and Angus Muddle.

Where to from here? The team will be travelling to Northern Beaches Secondary College (Freshwater Campus), with the winner going into the semi-finals.

Well done boys!

On Wednesday 12th June, Years 10, 11 and 12 were inspired by a presentation “The Truth Project” which was delivered by Jana and Scott from Year13. The program aims to demystify the journey from school to work, laying out how students can align their skills and passions to the best post-school options for them.

Using greats from the past like Leonardo da Vinci and modern day titans like Apple's Tim Cook, The Truth Projects drew fascinating connections between history, culture and the modern world to shed light on how our students can build their futures.

They were also shown how to find and use data to fuel their decision making going forward into the world of work. Using The Truth Project's own custom workbooks students scanned QR codes with their phones to find useful resources to help navigate to the future they want.

Thanks to Mr Connell for providing this opportunity to our students.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Whooping Cough Advice

Keep coughing kids home and see your GP.

Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019.

School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies.

What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members

2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough

3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough

For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website (https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx)

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

It's been an exciting morning at THS with over 180 students (and their parents) milling around the front of the school waiting to begin their journey of secondary schooling which will take them into the big wide world in a few years.
There are lots of new rules to learn - but you can do it!!!
One of THS key words is RESPECT and if we all respect each daily their time at THS will be looked upon in later years as some of the best days of their lives.

On the invitation of Mrs Kolbas and her 9T class, The Spinners and Weavers Guild attended THS to demonstrate to our students the age-old art and necessity of making cloth. They brought a variety of equipment, including drop spinners and spinning wheels. Initially Karma and Donna spoke to our students about the types and grades of wool, silk and flax used in spinning and passed around samples for the students to feel. It was a pleasure to see the enthusiastic responses from THS students who asked questions and volunteered to experiment with the spinning equipment. Indeed, when the bell went, many heads were still working furiously at carding wool, drop spinning to twine wool, and spinning to make wool. It was obvious that the students had thoroughly enjoyed their time with Karma and Donna.

Congratulations to the students who participated in a new activity, and THS is looking forward to a return visit sometime next year to demonstrate weaving on looms.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Today three Year 8 classes had fun creating sugar masks and marigolds to create an altar that remember departed relatives. Students brought photos of family members and adorned them with flowers and food. Thanks to Ms Mansell and Ms Beiers and Mr Gillard who joined in the fun with spanish music and festive clothes. A great end to their unit on the Incas.

On 26th October our Year 12 Society and Culture class visited the State Library/Mitchell Library in Sydney.

Here they participated in a tour and were introduced to the many valuable resources available both at the library itself and via online sites.

The students participated in a training session which will enable them to successfully access the many valuable resources available. These will be valuable for all subject areas being studied for their HSC. The students also spent time examining high scoring Personal Interest Projects from past HSC cohorts, a valuable experience gleaning ideas for their own projects.

Not only was it a valuable day but it was very enjoyable as well.

At Toronto High School, we value the ideas and perspectives of our students and have implemented the Student Voice Project for the first time. This project involves students from Year 7 and 8 learning about curriculum processes, and representing their peers to discuss a range of educational issues and to propose solutions.

By working with Y7 and 8 students we hope to:

Engage a variety of unique and interested young people in thinking about their learning

Encourage student leadership and active representation in the school community

Seek student feedback on learning experiences so that teachers can better inform their planning

Learn about student’s learning needs and interests

Increase student motivation for success in learning

Give students a voice in the Toronto school community

This project will involve students attending two sessions per term supervised by Mrs Smith-Kain and Mr Moore at the school for 2 hours. Students will also be asked to report back to their class on the discussions and actions in which they have participated.

The first session was held on 3rd August and the next on the 30th August followed by one in September and another in October.

The students were very excited to be chosen to be part of the project and worked enthusiastically during the first session that has been held.

On Tuesday 22nd May we had 3 teams compete at Howzat in the Newcastle Region for combined schools futsal. All teams represented the school in an outstanding way and had a lot of fun too!

The Under 14 girls worked better and better as a team as the day went on. They came up against some tough teams but just kept going. They just missed out on semi's which was a little bit disappointing for the girls, but they all said they had fun... playing.

The Under 16 girls were a bit more confident, as most of them had played in this comp last year. They held their own against some tough teams and made it through to the semi's. Unfortunately they didn't make it through to the grand final this year, but they should be proud of their efforts.

The Under 19 boys were a solid team. With 2 wins and a draw, they easily made it through to the semi's. A close semi-final saw the boys almost go into extra time, but they managed to sneak the win in the last 2 minutes of the game. This took them through to the grand final where they played against St Phillips. This was a very close game - with St Phillips getting the 3-2 win in the last couple of minutes. Finishing 2nd in the comp means that the boys will move through to the next round of FUTSAL - Champions of Champions

A huge congratulations to our students Joel Borrow, Tom Davies, Emily Burgin and Haukwen Tau who have formed the school based band "Tomohauk".

"Tomohauk" has recently entered the YouthRock 2018 competition. YouthRock is an official event for NSW Youth Week 2018 for teenage contemporary bands and songwriters. It is about encouraging young people to express themselves through music by writing and performing original material only. It also involves young people at every level of the production from organisation to sound, lighting and filming. Entrants are school based bands and we are proud to announce that THS has an entry in this competition - "Tomohauk".

The band had to record 2 original songs & video, with the Youth Rock 2018 Committee judging each entry. "Tomohauk" have now made it into the semifinals and will perform their music on stage in Sydney on 20 April. If they are successful at the semifinals, the grandfinal will be held on Sunday 22 April 2018.

The Moran Arts Foundation invites photographers to interpret ‘Contemporary Life in Australia' with an emphasis on Australians going about their day-to-day life. We want to see photography taken in Australia, by Australians, that reflects the diversity, multiculturalism and uniqueness of life, no matter where you live in Australia.

There are many ways to interpret this brief, but we are after your perspective on contemporary Australian society, your life, your dreams, your abilities, your inabilities, your mates, your loves, your environment & your landscape. We want the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful and the everyday. Entries are NOT restricted to portraits.

THS students starring in The One with Tantrum Youth Arts that will be staged outdoors in King Edward Park nightly from April 18 to 22.

The story has the performers moving in and around the park's rotunda, with a 30-member ensemble and musical backing by members of the University of Newcastle's Community Strings.

Audience members will be seated in chairs alongside the rotunda.

The five main characters are played by Bailey Ackling-Beecham, Sofie Dennis, Conagh Punch, Alexandra Rose, and Phoebe Turnbull, with Amy Morris directing and assisted by Lucy Shepherd and James Chapman.

Tantrum decided to stage the show outdoors because "site-specific theatre has its own magic, and what is more enchanting than string music and theatre under the stars?

The five performances of The One start at 6pm and run for an hour. There will be 100 seats alongside the King Edward Park rotunda.

Tickets are $35, concession (including children 5 and over) $20, with special rates for family groups.

Jamie Koppelhuber's work selected for Class of 17 Exhibition

Congratulation's to Jamie Koppelhuber, whose HSC Body of Work was selected for the exhibition First Class 17, a Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery project curated by Lisa Who and Helen Willis to be held 31 March – 13 May 2018. This year they received a record number of submissions from schools across the Hunter and Central Coast Regions.

This is a great honour.

Here is Jamie's amazing work and artist statement - ...
My photographs are a series of concealed travels, depicted by a lost adolescent artist that references the abnormally high childhood abductions during the 1970s and 80s. ‘Throwaways' are children who did not leave home voluntarily but were abandoned or forced from home by parents or guardians. My work represents the idea of a ‘missing child' when they failed to return home and embark on a solitary journey throughout these dystopic urban environments. I have used the influence of Jeffery Smart and Cindy Sherman to impact on a deeper meaning throughout the series. The subject matter in each new photograph depicts the different environments, angles and lighting used to allude to the passing of time with the incorporation of man-made elements to suggest the lost children within each society

Lauren Cadman has artwork in ART EXPRESS

Congratulations to THS student Lauren Cadman,

Her HSC Artwork has been selected for display in 2018 ARTEXPRESS exhibition at Orange Regional Gallery from 25 August 2018 – 23 September 2018

Her work GENESIS FLOREAT explores the genetic modification of flora as a result of altering climatic conditions. As climate change continues to develop throughout the world, these altering conditions are continuously influencing the growth and development of native and introduced plant species, causing changes in the genetic structure and visual appearance of flora. Paper mache and impasto have been used to create a heavy and painterly surface texture which highlights the bright colours and pattern pigmentation. Lauren has created hybrid forms of flora, by combining different genes of species to depict an original modified plant. Therefore, communicating the idea of the creation of unique, strange but beautiful hybrids of genetic modification.

ARTEXPRESS is an annual exhibition program featuring exemplary bodies of work from the NSW HSC Visual Arts examination, that aims to create high quality exhibitions HSC Work for metropolitan and regional NSW galleries that celebrate the talent of NSW HSC students and teachers connect with communities.

From 9,097 students who submitted Bodies of Works for the HSC, 175 bodies of work were selected to create ten exhibitions, representing schools from across NSW.

Great work Lauren and the CAPA staff for their guidance.

During September students from Toronto HS - Lachlan Maher, Caleb Watts, Skye Anderson, Toby Adams , Kayleb Bennett and Coby Howarth (all from Year 10), are embarking on the "Great North Walk for Mental Illness". The aim of the trek is to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute, who are dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness.

"This issue means a lot to us and we want to raise as much as we can to support research and awareness around mental health.

 Introducing.......the THS School APP!!!

In today's busy very mobile world, smartphones have made communication by voice, text and video easy. In 2013 Toronto High School is turning to a new technology to aid in the communication with parents.

Therefore we are proud to announce Toronto High School now has a School APP!!!

The APP will enable parents and students to read our newsletters with better accessibility through their smartphones and IPhones; be advised of messages as they come to hand; allow absent notes to be sent direct to the school instead of being lost in schoolbags (Parents - please ensure the school office has your email address on file); allow easy access to Parent Teacher Online bookings and much much more!!

Information on how to install our School APP is available -

	Download APP (docx 182 KB)

There is a rapidly growing trend for schools to move in the direction of improved school to parent communication and THS is proud to be at the forefront of this new technology.

Thank you for your continued support of our school.
